Spay & Neuter for Pets
in the greater Rocky Mount Area
Spaying and neutering are among the most common surgical procedures for dogs and cats. At Coats Veterinary Hospital, these procedures are approached with the same level of care and attention we would want for our own pets. Our veterinarians take time to evaluate each pet individually and discuss timing, health considerations, and recommendations with you before moving forward.
While
spay and neuter surgeries are routine, they are still important medical procedures. Our team focuses on careful preparation, close monitoring, and thoughtful recovery support to help ensure a safe and comfortable experience for your pet.

What is Spaying?
Spaying is the surgical procedure performed for female pets. The veterinarians at Coats do not take a one-size-fits-all approach when recommending the timing of this procedure. Instead, we consider factors such as your pet’s age, breed, and overall health.
We will talk with you about the timing of spay surgery and may discuss the potential benefits and considerations of delayed spaying for certain pets. These conversations help ensure the plan for your pet is based on their individual needs.
For breeds that may be at risk for certain conditions, your vet may also discuss procedures such as gastropexy that can be performed during surgery.
What is Neutering?
Neutering is the surgical procedure performed for male pets. As with spay procedures, your veterinarian will discuss the timing and any considerations specific to your pet’s health and lifestyle.
Our goal is to help you make an informed decision about when the procedure is most appropriate for your pet!

Surgical Care You Can Trust
Every pet that undergoes spay or neuter surgery at Coats Veterinary Hospital receives the same level of attentive care we would expect for our own animals. We limit the number of spay and neuter procedures performed each day so our team can give every patient the attention they deserve. Rather than scheduling a large number of surgeries in a single day, we focus on providing careful, individualized care for each pet.
Our surgical protocols include:
- A thorough physical exam before any medications are administered
- Pre-anesthetic bloodwork to help ensure anesthesia is safe for your pet
- IV fluid support during surgery
- A dedicated anesthesia assistant who monitors your pet throughout the procedure
- Multimodal pain management during and after surgery
- Comfort measures, including warm blankets during recovery
Hands On Care From Start to Finish
Our veterinarians remain closely involved throughout the entire process—from preparation and surgery to recovery. Your pet is monitored carefully during the pre-operative, surgical, and post-operative stages so our team can respond quickly to their needs.
