Your New Kitten

Coats Veterinary Hospital welcomes your new kitten into the practice.  Part of the joy of practicing veterinary medicine is watching your kitten grow and mature.  We recommend deworming your kitten and performing stool parasite checks as early as 2-6 weeks of age, as well as checking your kitten for any birth defects, ear mites and fleas.
bullet Vaccines:  Your kitten receives its first distemper vaccines at 9 and 12 weeks of age and 1 year rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age.  (If your kitten is older than 12 weeks of age, then two vaccines are still recommended to insure adequate immunity.)
We also strongly recommend testing your kitten for feline leukemia as soon as possible.  Vaccination for this disease is recommended if your pet goes outdoors at any time, visits boarding facilities, or if you take in other cats as strays.  (Vaccination is not recommended if your cat stays indoors and you test all other cats before they enter your household.)
Your kitten becomes full-grown at 1 year of age and will receive yearly boosters.
bullet Nutrition:  Your kitten needs to eat preferably a dry kitten food only until 1 year of age.  Then it can be slowly switched to an adult cat food.  We recommend Hills Science Diet Feline Growth for superior quality nutrition.
bullet Spaying/Neutering:  Your kitten will need to be spayed (female) or neutered (male) as early as 5-6 months of age (before heat cycle or puberty occurs).
Our mission statement is practicing quality veterinary medicine while serving you and your pet with friendly, personalized attention.  We look forward to helping you any way we can.
