What Cats Need

Your pet needs an annual comprehensive physical exam.  In addition, we will examine all pets before they receive a vaccination.  An exam my be the most important component of an office visit, because the veterinarian can examine your pet and discuss any medical problems.

bullet Distemper Vaccine:  This annual vaccination helps protect cats from three diseases: rhinotracheitis and calicivirus (respiratory diseases) and panleukopenia, commonly known as distemper.  All are highly contagious, potentially fatal viruses that are easily transmitted among cats.  Vaccination is your pet's only protection.

bullet Feline Leukemia Test:  This test is a blood test to identify those cats who are carriers of the feline leukemia virus.  This is a highly contagious virus, which can be transmitted from the mother to her kittens or can lay dormant for years before symptoms appear.  Testing will help the owner and veterinarian prevent spread of infectious disease as well as provide the best medical care for the cat.  Testing for FIV (feline infectious viremia) is also available in conjunction with the feline leukemia test.

bullet Feline Leukemia Virus Vaccine (FeLV):  This vaccination helps prevent feline leukemia, a major cause of death in cats.  The FeLV virus causes cancer and can severely depress the immune system so that the cat's body cannot fight off disease.  There is no successful treatment, but there is a vaccine.

bullet Rabies Vaccine:  This vaccinations is required by state government.  Vaccinations help prevent dogs from transmitting this deadly disease to people.

bullet Fecal/Stool Analysis:  We recommend a semi-annual stool test to detect intestinal parasites that threaten your pet's health.  Regular microscopic examination of your pet's stool provides early detection and treatment.

bullet Dental Care:  Tartar accumulation and gum inflammation affect most pets, and periodical disease may lead to infection of the liver, kidneys, and heart.  Prevent disease with regular dental care, beginning at home by brushing or cleaning your pet's teeth with animal toothpaste or oral cleansing products.  We recommend regular ultrasonic teeth cleaning and polishing under anesthesia.
