A recent burst of television advertisement offers fax, mail or internet-order medications for your pet at reduced costs.  We recently logged on to some internet companies to compare their "reduced" prices on these medications.  We found on several of the items that our regular prices are lower than their "reduced" prices, and on the items that we were slightly higher on, once you added the minimum shipping charge of $8.00, our prices are actually lower than theirs.

    While we have no problem prescribing medications from reputable sources, we do have very real concerns regarding these companies.  The reasons for our concerns may directly affect your pet and its well being.  The major veterinary pharmaceutical manufactures and distributors do not sell medications to these advertisers.  Instead, these promoters rely on secondary sources to obtain their inventory for sale to pet owners.  These sources are either foreign or veterinarians who have breached their ethics and are purchasing and selling to these companies.  Many of the drugs sold are regulated prescription only medications and are not safely administered without a veterinarian's care, pre-testing or follow-up testing to determine levels of toxicity and organ function.

    A recent incident involved a client receiving medication that was clearly labeled for foreign distribution. While we assume that the manufacturer is not shortcutting on production of foreign prescription drugs, we also know that other countries have different standards for production, manufacturing and clearance for distribution.  Only your imagination limits the possibilities of potential problems that might arise from this type of illegal distribution. 

    We will continue to prescribe medication for our active clients as long as the owner complies with our monitoring recommendations.  We will only script to pharmacies with a valid North Carolina License. We will ascertain to the best of our ability and knowledge that these pharmacies are following correct procedures under the laws of the United States.  If we find a company is not complying with the law, we will reserve the right to discontinue writing scripts for medications to these companies.

    We maintain an in-house pharmacy for our clients' convenience as well as to assure that products from reputable sources with long expiration dates.  Because we plan our purchases for the needs of the practice's entire client base, we negotiate to obtain the best possible pricing that can be passed on to ouR clients.  Our purpose is to continue providing a reliable source for medications we believe serve your pet's health needs as safely, efficaciously and conveniently as possible.
